The MP980 uses six: cyan, yellow, magenta, dye-based black, dye-based gray, and pigment-based black. The MP970 used seven inks-cyan, yellow, magenta, light cyan, light magenta, pigment-based black for text, and dye-based black for photos. The two models even share the same lack of office-centric features, with no automatic document feeder (ADF) or fax support.ĭespite all these similarities, however, the MP980 also differs from the MP970 in important ways, most notably in its ink system. It can both scan and print directly from 35mm slides and strips of film, and print directly from PictBridge cameras and memory cards (but not USB keys), letting you preview photos on a 3.5-inch color LCD display. It can print, scan, copy, and e-mail-by opening a message on your PC and adding a scanned document as an attachment.

In some ways, the MP980 is a straightforward update to the MP970, sharing most of the same features. The MP980 carries on in that tradition, earning an Editors' Choice of its own. The MP970 had the distinction of printing great-looking photos while being far less expensive than any of its competition.
You can use them as AIOs, but you can justify using them also as home photo labs without ever connecting them to a computer. Both models are what I like to call photo-lab all-in-ones (AIOs).
